correct me if I'm wrong
Jan. 29th, 2006 04:11 pmWell, tomorrow begins the big Superbowl Weekend. This wouldn't effect me, except for the fact that I'm in Detroit at school, and the game is being held here. And I can't help but be..a little excited, you know? Not for the game. Just wondering how this will effect the city for the future. Lord knows we need good publicity, bring some folks in, turn this place around..It's not the shithole people make it out to be. But that's what happens when people move away and leave the poor to suffer alone. Then the people who left look back and say, "See? Aren't you glad we moved away from that?" without ever thinking that they may have caused it.
Haha, that must be my Honors professor rubbing off on me. But still. It's kind of hard to detatch myself from this city. I wasn't raised in it, just around it. Living in it makes me care about it more. There are wonderful things here! Hell, the Fox Theatre sells more tickets than even Radio City in New York. Sure, there's the grime, the crime, and all the bad that entails, but all cities have that. I don't think people can ridicule a place they've only read about from one-sided newspapers/reporters.
I really do wish I could do something for this place. I don't know what, yet. And I know I'm not ready. But someday, I'll give it a go. Even if it's just sending money to the schools. They don't have textbooks, so that would be useful, haha.
But, yeah, everyone around this area is really hoping that this event will shine a brighter light on our poor city. It may not be much, but we'll take what we can get.
The one thing that irks me is that I hear they're throwing the homeless a Superbowl party. Wtf. How about some money, food, or shelter? XD; Kwame Kilpatrick is just...rrgh. I don't even know.
But, yeah. Yeehaw. Maybe my teachers will ease up on work since the big event's coming? Prolly not. Damn.
