HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. /vent.
Anyway uh.
Yes. Watchmen.
QUILLA SHOWED UP. The country is safe. I missed that girl. Now she's here. On the lj. Prepare to waste all your work funds on comics, girl. It's kind of what happens when you lurk here. So Quillas and Chrises and Nicks were acquired for Watchmen viewing. Nick and I were the first in the theater, so we claimed the back rowwhich was fantastic, except for the fact that as time wore on, that theater got really really warm and we were kind of dying.
Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan (with clothes. WITH CLOTHES thank God) cosplayers sat next to us. There was also a Comedian a handful of rows down with some really nice arm pads. This is why I like going to midnight shows. Silly kids.
An-y-who.
The film?
Overall, I really liked it. I thought it was really loyal to the source, to the best of its ability, without becoming insanely bogged down with all the stuff it'd have to cover to be a complete mirror. The ending change was appropriate and I think it worked really well.
Things I liked:
» Dr. Manhattan. His voice, especially. It had a lot of sincerity, and though I had initially expected him to sound more monotone, I think the way he spoke in the movie really, really worked out. Also yes Anna. There was penis. Just no balls what is up with that. Also the effects underneath his skin and in the "whites" of his eyes both pleased me and made me feel for the effects team. Looked like a render farm's nightmare, it did.
» Rorschach holy shit he looks like he kind of crawled out of the comic. I was delighted. God. I could stare at his face all day it just worked. And his "do it. DO IT." at the end got me good.
» Dan's dweeb glasses. So it's okay he wasn't really pudgy he was still a NERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRD.
» Ozy's face and hair. I don't know why. He was a pretty piece of flesh okay.
» Gratuitous violence. You can has it. It is everywhere. So much that I could not look at the screen sometimes. But it was great.
Things I did not like:
» Some scenes felt too drawn out. Okay yeah Laurie, Dan, get your thing on but I don't need to see every facial expression and position. And some flashbacks kind of trailed on, but I know why they did. I just know that non-readers would find that exhausting, too.
» Laurie. I didn't feel for her like I did in the comics. Her acting felt a little stale and forced. I wanted to feel bad for her, but nothing really made me want to.
» THE ABSENCE OF "MIGHT BE HOMOSEXUAL. WILL INVESTIGATE FURTHER." Trivial line but I always liked it. :(
» That scene where Ozy's toasting his success with his research team and then the camera view changes from his face closeup to a backshot with everyone suddenly dead. It's actually a good way to get around having to drag on them dying but I didn't hear any damn bodies drop and that bugs me for no reason at all. :|
» Idk I'm grasping straws here I don't really have anything to complain about. I really liked this movie. And if you read the comic GO SEE ITTTTT. And if not still go but it might be a little derpy for you.

Date: 2009-03-06 06:57 pm (UTC)sometimes I was a little annoyed at how long/detailed the fighting and sex scenes were? Maybe less annoyed and more embarrassed. I don't know, I just feel I'd have to defend those parts if I took some of my friends. But they know the fanbase wants it, and I can easily defend it as ~symbolic and deep~.
I did approve of gratuitous male nudity. *slaps naked man asses*
I loved Night Owl in the movie, he was so derpy and adorable. AND THE 99 LUFTBALLONS SCENE WAS JUST THE EPITOME OF PERFECTION. *holds it*
mmmmm all the cuts and changes I agree were necessary to make things make sense without 30 minutes of explaining it. Their version ending was just simpler, which was for the best.

And so I am satisfied, because we seem to have very similar taste. :D *waits contentedly for Sunday*

Date: 2009-03-07 12:58 am (UTC)Everyone keeps saying it's okay cause they're comparing it to the book. Like "oh it was really good as a movie BUT COMPARED TO THE COMIC IT WAS ONLY OKAY"
blah.
Ozy reminded me of David Bowie in a weird way. But, you know, prettier.
